STRIPING YOUR CAR - Painted on or Vinyl?

When considering striping for your Ford Mustang or any other car you have two basic choices. Painted on stripes or vinyl adhesive stripes. Both have pros and cons associated with them.

Painted on stripes are normally applied by a body shop/paint shop and will run anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending upon who does job and the quality you get. Painted on stripes will generally last longer than vinyl stripes and will conform over scoops and other obstacles better than vinyl. For cars that will be in shows this is often the best choice. The downside to painted on stripes is the expense and the fact that they are difficult to alter or change. If you are not pleased with them you are generally stuck with what you have. This applies to botched up striping jobs as well. I had silver stripes sprayed on my blue Jeep and they looked good other than the fact that they were crooked. To fix them the they would have to be sanded off and resprayed which would of course involve ruining the blue paint as well. So I decided to leave it the way it was. I was never happy with the way it looked. If the stripes had been vinyl the fix would have been very simple. Pull off the bad sections and replace them.

Vinyl stripes are much less money with prices ranging from $25 - $100 for a do it yourself kit. Kits can be installed in 1 - 4 hours depending on the complexity of the kit and how much striping you are applying. Once applied they look almost identical to sprayed on stripes at a fraction of the price. Plus you don't have to be without your car for a week. Vinyl Stripes are not difficult to apply and will last for years if properly cared for. Longevity depends on what type of material was used and how much the car is exposed to the sun and weather. Over the past decade tremendous improvements have been made in vinyl production and quality. High Quality vinyl with a 6 year outdoor rating is now readily available whereas 5 years ago this was not the case. Also, a huge variety of colors are now available. Both standard and metallic.

When your stripes need replacing it is easy to remove them and easy to replace them. They can be easily removed by simply heating with a hair dryer or heat gun, peeling and then removing any residue with Goo Gone or another adhesive remover. For the cost of one set of painted stripes you can buy 10 sets of vinyl stripes.

Another advantage of vinyl is that a computer is used for design work making it possible to integrate in curves, logos and other features that would be tough to do using only paint. If you want to add more striping to your car like rocker panel stripes the same brand and color code vinyl can be used so you get a perfect match. If you want a custom rocker panel stripe with a unique word this is not a problem at all with vinyl.

In summary, painted on stripes should be considered when curves and obstacles make vinyl impractical. Otherwise vinyl makes more sense from a budgetary and practical standpoint. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
